Find Your Fall Shade: A Guide to This Season's Prettiest Gems

Every fall, I get some version of the same question: "What color should I be wearing this season?" Usually it's asked standing in front of a rack, holding two hangers, torn between the safe black sweater and something with a little more personality. So I put together this cheat sheet: five gem tones we're leaning on hard this year, who they tend to look amazing on, and how to wear them without buying a whole new wardrobe.

Deep Plum

Think of this as your black or navy's more interesting cousin. If you're fair or medium-toned, plum gives you all that same sophistication but with warmth and depth that black just can't do. It catches the light differently against your skin instead of flattening it. Great for a Sunday brunch or dressed up with gold hoops for dinner out. Pair it with gray, denim, or soft neutrals.

Forest Green

Classic for a reason. This one's especially gorgeous on fair skin and blondes, but honestly it does something magic against darker hair too. That contrast is stunning, especially in a knit you'll actually want to live in all November. Pair it with denim, camel, ivory, and gold jewelry for that rich, put-together-without-trying look.

Berry

This is the "I want color but not too much color" shade, perfect for the person who owns eleven black tops and is finally ready to branch out. Medium and olive skin tones especially glow in it, adding warmth and a little life to your complexion without ever feeling like too much for a Tuesday.

Wine

The one that works on basically everybody, which is why it's the shade I recommend when someone tells me they "don't really wear color." Those red-brown undertones warm up fair skin and look incredible against deeper complexions too. Dress it up with black and cream for a night out, or keep it easy with denim or a touch of leopard.

Chocolate

Consider this your new neutral. It goes with everything black does (jeans, gold, silver, camel) but feels warmer and more elevated this season. If bold color still feels like a stretch, chocolate is the gentlest way in.

Wearing Two at Once

If you want to go a step further, these shades actually love being paired with each other, just don't split them 50/50. Let one lead and use the other as the accent: a wine sweater with a plum scarf, or a chocolate coat over a berry top. And you don't need to overhaul your closet to try it: a scarf, a bag, or even just the earrings you wear closest to your face is enough to test-drive a color before committing to a whole piece.
